Madison, Wis. - John W. Vaudreuil, United States Attorney for the Western District of Wisconsin, announced that Jan Sollman, 32, New Richmond, Wis., was sentenced Friday, August 5, 2011 by U.S. District Judge William Conley to one year in prison for filing a false refund claim with the IRS. Sollman pleaded guilty to this charge on May 23, 2011.

Sollman pleaded guilty to filing a false 2006 income tax return with the IRS that requested a refund of $34,394. At Friday's sentencing, Judge Conley found that Sollman filed false claims for refunds for tax years 2003 through 2008 that totaled $170,863. Sollman actually received $57,846.82 in fraudulently obtained refunds from the IRS.

The charges against Sollman were the result of an investigation conducted by the Internal Revenue Service Criminal Investigation Division office in Madison. The prosecution of this case was handled by Assistant U.S. Attorney Daniel J. Graber.
